Play Dough Recipes

#1 Basic Recipe

Supplies:

• 1 ½ cups of salt
• 3 cups of flour
• 3 cups of water (if color is desired, add to water)
• 6 teaspoons cream of tartar
• 3 Tablespoons of cooking oil

Instructions:

1. Mix all ingredients in a large heavy skillet or Dutch oven.
2. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly.  Mixture will suddenly become stiff.
3. Keep stirring until mixture cleans bowl like pie dough.
4. Remove from heat, cool.
5. Knead until pliable.
6. Store in plastic bag or air-tight container.  Does not need to be refrigerated.

#2 Silvia's Play Dough Recipe

Supplies:

• 6 cups of All Purpose Flour
• 2 cups of salt
• 2 Tablespoons of Alum
• 6 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
• 4 cups of boiling water
• 1 ounce of liquid food coloring

Instructions:

1. Using a very large bowl, add all dry ingredients and stir with a whisk.
2. Add oil to ingredients in the bowl.  (For added scent and sweet smell, add two packages of unsweetened Kool-Aid.)
3. Add food coloring to boiling water.
4. Add boiling water to ingredients in bowl.
5. Stir with a fork until dough forms.  Let cool to touch.
6. Knead on a lightly floured surface for at least 10 minutes.  If dough is sticky, knead in more flour.

#3 Gluten-Free Play Dough

Supplies:

• ½ cup rice flour
• ½ cup cornstarch
• ½ cup salt
• 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
• 1 cup water
• 1 teaspoon cooking oil
• food coloring, if desired

Instructions:

1. Mix ingredients.
2. Cook and stir on low heat for 3 minutes or until it forms a ball.
3. Cool completely before storing in an air-tight plastic bag.
